Sometimes the GP is not the most appropriate healthcare professional to deal with your ailment.
Please see the information provided, which may help you decide whether contacting a GP is truly necessary or whether it might be better for you to see a Community Pharmacist, Optician, Dentist, Physiotherapist etc.
You can even self-refer for some services without seeing your GP.
We offer same day consultations for children under 16 with acute presentations.

Please remember that self care for common conditions can help free up our GPs’ time, making it easier to get an appointment when you have a more serious condition.

Community Pharmacist – Fferyllydd Cymunedol
Pharmacists are highly trained health professionals and can give you confidential health advice for a range of common illnesses and complaints.
Don’t wait for a GP appointment for coughs, colds, aches and pains. Just call your local pharmacy a call or drop in – there’s no need to make an appointment.
Your pharmacists can also help you decide if you need to see a doctor or nurse.
NHS 111 – GIG 111
111 is the free NHS non-emergency number.
You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but it’s not a life-threatening situation.
Call 111 if:
- You need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency
- You think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service
- You don’t know who to call or you don’t have a GP to call
- You need health information or reassurance about what to do next

Physio Direct is a telephone service that has been set up to provide early advice and management for people with back/neck/joint problems or muscle and soft tissue injuries.

Podiatry Services – Podiatreg
Direct Access Telephone Service 0300 300 0024 (Monday- Friday 08:45-16:15 excluding Bank Holidays)
This is a telephone service to provide direct access for advice and assessment of foot related problems.
You will be asked a number of questions by the podiatrist so that he or she can fully understand your problem.
You will be asked questions about:
- Your foot problem
- The medicines you are taking
- Any medical problems
Please have this information readily available when you telephone. It would also be helpful if you could have your hospital or NHS number available.
The podiatrist will then discuss with you the best way of helping you manage your foot problem. This may include one or more of the following options:
- Advice over the telephone
- An appointment at a podiatry clinic where your foot/feet will be examined and a treatment plan agreed
All patients needing an appointment will be seen according to the priority of their condition. Relevant health education information will be sent to you, if appropriate, following the telephone assessment.

Minor Injuries Department – Neath Port Talbot Hospital – Adran Mân Anafiadau – Ysbyty Castell-nedd Port Talbot
Adults and children over the age of one who have had an accident within the last couple of weeks can be seen at the Neath Port Talbot Hospital Minor Injury Unit.
It is open between 7.30am and 11.00pm, seven days a week, at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, Baglan Way, Port Talbot, SA12 7BX.

An experienced team of specially-trained emergency nurse practitioners, triage nurses and health care support workers treat patients for minor conditions including:
- Cuts and minor burns
- Sprains and strains
- Broken bones
- Dislocation of the shoulder, fingers and toes
- Head and facial injuries with no loss of consciousness and the patient is not taking anticoagulant (blood thinner) medication.
- Neck injuries, where you are mobile with no pins and needles in your arms
- Back injuries where you are mobile and the pain has not occurred from you twisting your back or lifting something
- Foreign bodies to eyes, ears and nose
- Non-penetrating eye and ear injuries
- Rib injuries where you are not coughing up blood and you don’t have a chest infection
- Bites (insect, animal or human)
- Insect stings
- Assaults
The team cannot treat:
- Colds, coughs, sore throats, earache, rashes, temperatures
- Urinary infections, cystitis or catheter problems
- Dental problems
- Accident with injury to abdomen/stomach
- Chest pain
- Breathing problems
- Stroke
- Painful limbs, joints or backs
- Skin complaints including boils and rashes
- Wounds that have not been caused during an accident
